The Iron Gate is known as a part of nature protected area as national park, with many nature monuments and area with a numerous rare plant and animal species along the Danube.
Тhere are many landscapes and biotopes with their numerous rare animal and plant species and ecosystems spread along the Danube. The region is known for its numerous species and biotopes that haven’t changed to a significant extend since the ice age and represent nature treasure. The Iron Gate forest is wide with a mixed beech and oak forest as predominant.
The region is habitat for fifty species of mammals and over hundred and trirty species of birds. The wolf, lynx, brown bear, otter and eagle are particularly worth mentioning. Twice a year hundreds of thousands of migrating birds pass through the Iron Gate on their way to the summer or winter residence.
